Spring 2010 mega-trend: Whitewash

Does style need a clean slate? After a few less-than-memorable rocker too-cool-for-school seasons, American designers have decided to go for a fresh start. They ranged from edgy to sweet. Just check out the precision-cut smock from Calvin Klein. These aren’t bridal whites, but they do look fresh and clean.

Day 8: #NYFW Fashion Moment

Did Andre, Grace and Anna like this fringed look? Check Vogue’s March 2011 issue for the answer. The final day of fashion week is quite possibly the best. Ralph Lauren, Isaac Mizrahi, Calvin Klein and Gwen Stefani were all part of the strongest collections I’ve seen in a few years. Spring 2011 is well-defined and [...]

Day 7: #NYFW Fashion Moment

At 3.1 Phillip Lim, the set involved oversized crown moldings strewn across the enormous Park Avenue Armory. Models had been stripped of their jewelry and embellishment in the chic layers that characterized the collection. Spring trends spotted on the runway included leather, khaki hues and longer hemlines. Kanye West (in a hot pink jacket!), Rashida [...]

Day 6: #NYFW Fashion Moment

Good thing that hemline theory has been disproved. Skirt lengths are going below the knee for spring 2011. Full skirts graze mid-calves in dramatic form. At Marc by Marc Jacobs, the super-wearable collection combined neutral shades of khaki and gray with bright party stripes. There’s just no skirting the issue for spring. More photos after [...]

Day 5: #NYFW Fashion Moment

It was Ladies Day at Lincoln Center! From Carolina (Herrera) to Tracy (Reese) to Monique (Lhuillier) to Betsey (Johnson), there was something for everywoman to covet. In general, I’ve been told Minnesota is a cocktail dress kind of place and not-so-into gowns. I’d rather not believe it, nor would the more than six Minnesotans looked [...]

Spring 2011 mini-trend: Trench details

Rain coats are practical, but now the classic trench (thank you, Burberry) has been reinvented by American designers. From actual rain coats to variations on trenches (see the Ports 1961 photo, above) to pieces of them — epaulets, belts, storm flaps — you’ll be prepared for any weather. More photos after the jump.

Spring 2011 mini-trend: Red accessories

One of the easiest ways to get your wardrobe ready for spring will be a bright red accessory. DKNY showed most looks with red pumps, Tommy Hilfiger did red belts and bags and Derek Lam, Charlotte Ronson and ADAM (pictured) also popped a bit of crimson somewhere on their looks.

Minnesotans in the City

Two Minnesotans had their New York Fashion Week debuts over the weekend. Tara LaTour (above) showed a bridal collection and Adrienne Yancy (below) presented swimwear. They weren’t at Lincoln Center… yet. But, it was fun to watch them in action. Read about them in Monday’s Star Tribune. A photo from each collection after the jump.

Day 4: #NYFW Fashion Moment

Do you think Rachel Zoe liked this white minimalist Derek Lam show-closing dress as much as I did? Hard to read that expression. The notes on this show are about West Coast minimalism, including artists Larry Bell, Donald Judd and Dan Flavin. It seems that Lam is California dreaming for spring 2011.

Day 3: #NYFW Fashion Moment

WANG! Alexander, that is. When you see so many things in a week, it’s exciting to see something that’s simply fresh. Wang’s show started with all white looks, inspired by construction and work clothes. There were metallic (bronze, silver) abstract stripes on some items to symbolize duct tape. There appeared to be stiff white paint [...]
